Every six months. It is one of the most repeated pieces of dental advice, and for most people, it is genuinely good advice. But the honest answer is that the right cleaning schedule depends on you. Here is how to think about it.
Why six months works for most people
For a healthy mouth, a professional cleaning every six months does two important things. It removes the hardened plaque, called tartar, that even careful brushing and flossing cannot remove. And it gives your dental team a regular chance to catch small problems while they are still small and inexpensive to treat.
A cavity found early is a simple filling. The same cavity found two years later can mean a crown or a root canal. Regular visits are how you stay on the easy side of that line.
When you might need to come in more often
Some people benefit from a more frequent schedule, often every three or four months. This includes patients who:
- Are managing gum disease or a history of it
- Have diabetes or certain other health conditions
- Are prone to heavy tartar buildup
- Smoke or use tobacco
- Are pregnant, since hormonal changes can affect the gums
If any of these apply to you, we will recommend a schedule that keeps you healthy and explain exactly why.
Could you ever need fewer visits?
Rarely. Even people with excellent home care benefit from twice-yearly professional cleanings and exams, because the exam is doing more than the cleaning. It is checking your gums, your bite, and screening for oral cancer. Those checks matter regardless of how good your brushing is.
What you do at home still matters most
Professional cleanings work best alongside good daily habits: brushing twice a day for two minutes, flossing once a day, and going easy on sugary and acidic drinks. The cleanings handle what you cannot reach. Your daily routine handles everything else.
Not sure how long it has been? That is a good sign it is time. Request a cleaning and we will get you back on track, gently and without judgment.
